Three hours later they approached the rundown Honolulu Airport in yet another Uber. Instead of trying to navigate the perplexingly-signed complex, they could lean into the backseat and leave it to the Uber driver to find the inter-island departure terminal.

When they arrived, they looked for signs for Hawaiian Airlines, the only carrier currently offering inter-island flights, and, of course, couldn’t find one. They both turned in opposite directions and started walking. It only took a few seconds until Michael called her over to a small placard cunningly hidden by a palm leaf.

“I was right,” he said.

“I know you think you’re a master navigator, but it just so happens that that location is a temporary arrangement. Don’t get too cocky. Hawaiian Airlines is usually over there.” Emma thumbed behind her.

“Interesting how we both went in opposite directions.”

“I don’t see it as very interesting.” She squinted. “This airport is a clusterfuck. Everyone knows that.”

“But I went one way, and you immediately chose the other. Don’t you find that interesting?” This time his inner brow lowered and he rubbed at the back of his hair. Was he going to get serious on her?

“No. Why should I trust you over my own instincts?” It was clear this wasn’t about the terminal navigation any longer. Emma forced herself to shut her mouth and led them in Michael’s direction. If they hadn’t talked about anything serious up until now, why would they choose the start of a paradisiacal, spur-of-the-moment getaway to ruin the moment?

“You should trust me,” he said with a depth to his gaze that made her weak in the knees.

“We’ll see.”

“And you should trust yourself, too. It’s not an either-or kind of thing. In fact, I’m positive they go hand in hand,” he said.

Thirty-five minutes into the flight, Michael had nearly made her spill her complimentary guava juice. She closed her eyes for a second, and he put his hand over hers. She’d wished she was ready to open her eyes and show him how it had affected her, but she didn’t dare. Sex was one thing. Meaningful caresses were something quite different. Trusting yourself is something different, too. Effing inner voice was getting stroppy.

After, she waited for her heartbeat to slow, but no such luck. Now he moved himself closer so their thighs and knees were touching the whole time, like they couldn’t help themselves.

Which they couldn’t. She couldn’t anyway. There was a lusty flush over her face and chest and she felt that squiggly urgency take over her muscles.

Emma convinced herself this was just easier to deal with. Sex was sex. It didn’t have to lead to unravelling, or, God forbid, trusting herself. She was headed to paradise with Michael Kavanagh. Why not roll with the fantasy, mate?

If her reasoning wasn’t sitting quite as squarely as it had before, she wasn’t ready to admit it. She just rode the sensation of his fingertip grazing up the inside of her arm and let herself turn into a puddle of greedy need.
